Master your Leadership
“Leaders don’t create followers. They create more leaders.” ~ Tom Peters
Success as a business owner boils down to one thing: your ability to lead. Whether you are leading a small team of assistants, a staff of producers, colleagues on a team of peers, clients, or yourself, the skills of leadership — once scoffed at as merely “soft skills” — are at the top of the “want to improve” list for most companies.
Business owners are recognizing that unless they take strong leadership seriously, they will fall behind their competitors.
You, as the business owner, may be the leader of your company, but you’ve also got to develop the leadership skills of your team. After all, the people you have employed are the very heart of what makes your company tick.
Their technical skills may be key, but their leadership skills are too. I know an engineering firm that, given the choice, will hire someone with a 3.0 GPA and superior “people skills,” instead of someone with a 4.0 who will do an excellent technical job but never come out of her cubicle.
And it’s up to you to harness these leadership qualities in every individual on your team. Starting with yourself.
Let’s be clear: The terms “leader” and “boss” are not interchangable. Being the boss does not make you a leader. You may have hierarchical authority, but if you haven’t mastered your leadership, you’ll find a lot of struggle in your role. By the same token, leaders can be cultivated at every level of your organization.
You see, leadership is not something you “do.” Or something assigned. Leadership is an energy… an essence… a set of qualities… your ability to influence followers.
